The Norfolk Southern VersaCoil Gondola for HO scale is a versatile coil car designed to haul a range of coilsâ€â€from roughly 30 to 72 feetâ€â€using a transverse trough loading system that speeds loading and reduces edge damage. This NS Phase 2 model reproduces the VersaCoil body with removable hoods on NS, NOKL, and MBKX variants, and it’s packed with authentic detailing: separate wireform grab irons, etched metal coupler platforms, 100-ton roller-bearing trucks with animated bearing caps, trainline and brake hoses, coupler lift bars, and body-mounted operating scale knuckles. Machined metal wheels with RP25 contours keep operation smooth on common HO track, and the car is weighted for stable, realistic performance with a minimum radius of 18 inches and a recommended 22 inches for best results.
The VersaCoil design prioritizes loading efficiency and safety by carrying coils in a transverse trough rather than along a single bulkhead. This NS variant includes removable hoods where applicable, plus extensive underbody detail, etched platforms, rubber train-line hoses, and additional metal grab irons and hardware to mirror the prototype. The model honors the coil-car lineage originally built by Johnstown America (later FreightCar America) and, across four replicated VersaCoil phases, offers a highly detailed, ready-to-run addition to an HO Norfolk Southern freight roster.
