Description
HO Scale H16-44 Phase III Locomotive in Penn Central Black is a detailed HO-scale model that faithfully recreates Fairbanks Morse’s mid-century H16-44 Phase III diesel for period layouts. The model captures road-specific detailing such as hood doors and handrails, separately installed grab irons, and both dynamic and non-dynamic carbodies, with a fully detailed underbody featuring piping and conduits. Lighting includes lit number boards, headlights, and class lights that mirror the prototype. Available in DC-only or DC/DCC-ready formats, with optional DCC sound, it rides on prototypical trucks from Dofasco or Fairbanks Morse, and road-name–specific fuel tanks and steam generators where applicable add authenticity. The drive system, derived from Rapido’s FA-2 design, provides smooth operation, while Macdonald Cartier magnetic couplers are mounted at the correct height for reliable hooking to HO rolling stock.
Phase III updates refined the original H16-44 with a raised walkway and simplified hood design to better match the real locomotives, and this HO-scale model captures those refinements along with the variety of railroads that used Phase III units between 1955 and 1963. It’s a natural fit for late-1950s to early-1960s layouts, pairing well with era-accurate rolling stock and scenery. With accurate dimensions, road-specific detailing, prototypical trucks, and a proven drive system, this locomotive delivers authentic appearance and dependable performance on standard HO layouts, whether run in DC, DCC, or with sound.
