HO Scale 50′ Youngstown Plug-Door Insulated Box Car is a faithful representation of a mid-20th-century freight car designed for temperature-sensitive service on model railroading layouts. The model captures the distinctive plug doors that slide into place to form a tight seal, mirroring how real equipment protected cargo on long runs.
Built for realistic operation, it rides on 70-ton roller-bearing trucks with 33-inch machined metal wheels using RP25 contours and is weighted for optimum performance. Separately-applied brake wheels and ladders, along with body-mounted McHenry operating scale knuckle couplers, add authentic handling. The injection-molded body is highly detailed and painted and printed to match prototypical paint schemes, and the minimum radius is 18 inches, making it suitable for a wide range of layouts. Historically, insulated 50-foot plug-door box cars kept temperature-sensitive cargoâ€â€such as canned foodsâ€â€within a few degrees of the original temperature over several days, a feature reflected in this model’s design.
